Perhaps the most famous opening lines from any nineteenth-century novel are the opening lines to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." The Award winning performance of this classic story will be done by Cincinnati Shakespeare in an remake by Jon Jory will be preformed February 18 thru March 13, 2011.



Set in the English countryside outside of England, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the story of love, betrayal, strength and pride to oneself. The story involves the Bennet family. The family has come to the realization that after the death of Mr. Bennet the family patriarch his estate has to pass to a male heir. This under English common law this was call an entail deed. It would pass to the next closest relative which was male, it could be a brother, nephew, or cousin if the individual didn’t have a male offspring. Mr. Bennet's wife and five daughters would be without house and home. This upset Mrs. Bennet who was very concerned with social status and standing. Mr. Bennet was less concerned about the situation and knew all would work out.

The plot of this story starts with Bingley family renting an country estate. Charles Bingley, a wealthy bachelor accompanied by his sisters and his close friend Mr. Darcy. Mr. Bingley is well received in the community as friendly and an ideal catch. It was not until Mr. Bingley – this new resident of the countryside- does the Bennett family, particularly Mrs. Bennett, discover that finding a suitor may not be as difficult as they thought. However his close friend Mr. Darcy is seen by many as cold aloof, non friendly or forthcoming, and conspicuously uninteresting. He had a distaste for the rural area and enjoyed the city life of London much more. Mr. Bingley quickly showing interest in the Benett daughter Jane Benet. However Elizabeth questioned his intentions and was very protective of her sister. Also Elizabeth a very pride and intelligent young lady also was strong willed didn’t like the ideal of arranged marriages or social status. She especially didn’t like Mr. Darcy who she thought of as very snobbish and rude. Mr. Darcy however was secretly and very deeply enchanted by her independence.
